This set of Lyon's Maid ice cream (lolly) cards is a British Confection issue. This lolly set is called Space Exploration and is represented by 40 cards issued in the celebration of Space Exploration. The set was issued in 1963. Each card features a color drawing of either people or events promoting Space Exploration. The backs of the cards identify the image featured on the front. The cards were distributed in the lolly wrappers, inside the secret pocket which kept them clean. One card in each ice pop. There was also an album which you could send away for that was designed to display and collect the cards in. The Album was called 'The Space Album' but the cards were called 'Space Exploration'. What do the cards look like? Here are four cards that represent the 40 card set. They are approximatly 37mm x 68mm for a single card. Each card has the picture on the front and the description on the back. Do you have a list of the different cards? Sure, that can be done. Feel free to click the top and sort the list either way you want. Clicking the name link will render a picture front and back to view.

How Does The Card Get To The Buyer? Because Lyons Maid was selling an iced pop (lolly) the potential for the cold and wetness of a melted pop could have ruined the card. Unlike tea cards in coffee that got wrapped in cellophane, Lyons Maid came up with a secret compartment in the lolly wrapper to keep the card safe and sound. Here is a picture of the wrapper. Zoom was the pop name. At the bottom of the wrapper it says "Space Exploration Picture Card In The Secret Pocket." It must have been a meeting or two before Lyons Maid decided to come up with the secret pocket. Very cool, even for an Iced Lolly.

| What does the album look like? Of course Lyons Maid made a cool album to hold those 40 cards. They titled it "The Space Album" even though the card set is called "Space Exploration" but that's OK. So what does it look like? We at least have a peek at the cover and a few pages. It appears this is a typical collector album with places for each card, the descriptions from the back of the cards shown below the pictures in the album and occasional other supporting drawings and text. Of course a big ad on the inside last page is typical as well. Are There Ads to Collect? Back in '63 they wanted kids to eat those iced lollys. So they advertised in popular magazines. They also needed to let the kids know about the albums. The albums were offered for free! Just the 6d cost of shipping. What a bargain!" The album and most of 5 cards are displayed in the ad. They tell us we can get this FREE space album, for only the cost of shipping. They give you a form to fill out, type in BLOCK CAPITALS please, and send 6d and get an album for your cards. We also learn that Zoom is the three stage iced lolly and that Steve Zodiac says so. About the only other things to talk about collecting are things we have witnessed in other series for other companies but not seen yet here.
