Comparison of 1963 Red Rose Dinosaurs to 1991 Red Rose Dinosaurs Series
Red Rose issued the Dinosaur series in 1963. It was Brooke Bond at that point. Then it became Lipton Red Rose and in 1991 they thought it would be cool
to reissue the Dinos again. They had been successful with the reissue of the Animals and Thier Young series the year before and they figured Dinos made
sense for the next step. Sadly, they put a lot of work into it but never put a single card into a tea box. Luckily, they did make up a few sets and we
get to see what they could have done....
Compare the Old with the New Dino Card Headers...
Exactly How Different are the Two Versions?
The top header is from 1963 and the lower image is from 1991. If I told you the old one was in English only and the new one was bilingual, then you
could figure out which is which without me telling you. The name of the series changed as well. From "Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals" to
"Dinosaurs and other fossils". The next thing to notice is that the Series Number is not listed, as was not done with the previous Lipton issue.
Of course, the bilingual choice meant that they needed to translate the text on all 48 cards.
I'm sure you are just itching to find out more differences between the two sets. How about a side by side comparison of the same card old and new? Yeah,
that's the ticket!
Let's look at the Ornitholestes card. The old series had this card listed at as card number 13 but with the new, we find Ornitholestes coming in as
the number 16 card. We also see that the people responsible for the text (William Swinton) and painting (Rudolph Zallinger) are credited with the original
but in the new, not so much. The original lists the parent company (Brooke Bond) on the back but Lipton does not do that. Just like with Animals and Their
Young, the albums went up from .25¢ to $1. The rest of the stuff at the bottom is different. The address is almost the same and mailing address
identifiers (zip codes) were different come 1991.
When you get to the picture side you see a different copyright date, 1963 and 1991, just like I
have been saying.
There were a bunch of re-numberings (just swapping the card number to something different.)
Then a few renames. We are talking about keeping the same texts but have different names.
Either way they still carry the same basic facts. What about cards that were in the old series that got
dropped in the new? The next logical thought would be to ask what was
added for artwork in the new series? What if we list the dinos by name and say where you can find
them in the new and old? Here is a list sorted by name. What do you say we take a peek.
What are the Differences Across the Series?
A quick (maybe not quick) comparison of the two series shows that:

Re-Naming
This is a list of cards with the same images and text but a different name.
-
Diplovertebron is the #2 card in the old series and the same card with the name changed to Ichthyostega.
-
Saltoposuchus is the #8 card in the old series and the #13 card in the new with the name changed to Ornithosuchus.
-
Antrodemus is the #14 card in the old series and the #17 card in the new with the name changed to Allosaurus.
-
Gorgosaurus is the #15 card in the old series and the #18 card in the new with the name changed to Albertosaurus.
Dropped Cards
- There are NO Dropped Cards.
- Forty-eight original Zallinger (artist) cards in the old series and the same forty-eight in the new.
Added Cards
- There are NO Added Cards.
- No new dino artwork was commissioned. Same old pictures with updated text and some French thrown in.
We wonder why the series was renumbered in the new version. What about the name changes? We can speculate about the name changes, Maybe the names
of the dinosaurs changed over twenty-eight years time to reflect the latest knowledge about each.
What About a List Sorted by Name?
This list shows all the dino names and where you can find them in the old and new series. You can click each of the four headers and get a different look at things.

Well I would say we carved this all up and back. We know what they did and did not do in the re-issue. Pretty neat!....
It's too bad that the dinosuar series never got off the ground the second time. What about Albums? Free Album Coupons? Order Forms? So many questions....
