So there are some posters for the grocery store that show off the pictures of the cards. Now that's what I'm talking about! What do you say we look at a few of them? The cool thing about collecting these Grocery Store Posters is that they are hard to come by. Why? Even though they were printed up by the thousands and distributed all over the US and Canada to grocery stores, what do you think happened to them after the store was done with them. Almost all of them hit the rubbish bin. It makes finding one a special treat. Of course, each issuance lined up with the series being given out at that time. What do you say we look at a few of them? I'd like to show them to you from oldest to newest so let's start with series 1, Songbirds of North America.
Now our next series is the 4th, Birds of North America. What happened to the 2nd and 3rd series? Well I told you these are hard to come by. I know some were made, I've just never seen them. OK, we are looking at the Birds of North America grocery store posters but first we gotta ask what type. What type? Well the posters advertise for several different reasons. The first is to show off a descent price for the product, perhaps a sale price... with the cards in the background. Don't forget that the product could be tea, coffee, or even Blue Ribbon products. The second reason is just to remind folks that Red Rose is the tea to drink because it has those nifty "Picture Cards". A third reason is that some grocery stores had the albums for sale. Yup, albums in house... and for a quarter, just like the mail in... except no waiting. The first poster from Series 4 is one that touts the price of the Blue Ribbon Spices while reminding you of the wonderful picture cards in each container. Hey, picture cards aren't just in tea, you know. Blue Ribbon products had cards in them as well. Remember?
The next poster from Series 4 is one that tells you to get your albums right here in the grocery store. All for .25¢. What???? You can buy an album right at the corner grocery store? Sign me up, I'll take a box full of empty albums.
Up next from Series 4 is the collection of the different posters displaying the "PICTURE CARDS" monicker. These posters were supposed to remind you of those awesome cards from the boxes of tea. These are my favorite types of grocery store posters. I don't know how many different cards are represented in the posters but I am aware of at least 4 different kinds of Series 4 card posters.
The next one is from the most popular series, the Dinosaurs, Series 5. What kind of poster is this one? It is an album poster. It tells you to get your albums at the grocery store. That's a good idea. You can buy an album right at the corner grocery store? What a bargain.
Up next from Series 5 is a couple of the different posters displaying the "PICTURE CARDS" monicker. These posters were supposed to remind you of those awesome cards from the boxes of tea. These are great grocery store posters. Some of the picture cards are shown so much larger than what we are used to seeing on our tea cards... and in living color.
The Series 9 Canadian Songbirds poster is actually two in one. By this point in the advertising evolution it appears they figured out that a flat two dimensional poster is not as practical as one that gets hung on a string or wire and offers a differnt view on each side. It is basically a two sided poster that is made to hang from a wire. Its a little bit difficult to explain but check out the pictures.
Transportation Through the Ages, Series 10 poster shows a couple of modes of transportation. The motorcycle is still driven today but the chariot is relegated to the museums. This poster would look pretty cool hanging in the store near a display of Red Rose. I'd buy a box or two.
The series 13 poster, Wildlife In Danger, is longer (taller) than the previous poster. It shows a magestic bear and a couple of gangly legged birds. As with every series, the artwork is exceptional.
This is another series 13 Wildlife In Danger picture cards poster, but this one is a dual with two images on each side. Yup, four images instead of two. Water scenes on one side and winter scenes on the other.
So you've seen the pictures I've collected of store posters. Some of these are mine and some are from what I have seen for sale. You can't win every auction on on eBay :-( So now you know what I know about Grocery Store Posters. |
